Some of U may know that I luv John Coltrane, Obama and Latin Americans (especialmente Los Hombres Suavemente;-). I add Anali to my list of luvs cuz she posts many things I luv including this new video (i have to limit my time at her spot cuz i gain a pound each time i visit - but this treat was calorie-free;-): Enjoy! After viewing this next one -- Why don't they just let The Obamas move into the Presidential Suites at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue this summer? Then the girls can settle in & be ready for school in September!

Great Start to Leap MONTH;-)

I TOLDJALL I'd be leaping into Greatness this YEAR! The Creator is gently prepping me to do the required Good works & keeping the required Good company;-). So, U know that last Friday I went to check out the art work of this Sistah Kara Walker. Well, I returned yesterday with a dear friend who wanted to check it out.

Initially, I thought my girl was going to call and say: "NEVER mind!" - because it was POURING down raining, cold and windy much of yesterday afternoon. My girl is a TROOPER and she met me down in the City. Now, anyone who lives in NYC will understand the effort it took for Sistah-Girl to leave her comfy abode in da Bronix, hop on the train and meet me on E. 75th and Madison to wait in a line in the rain;-). So, we make it into the museum, pay 'what we want', get in line for audio guides, wait for the elevator, get to the third floor of The Whitney then begin "dancing" around the multitudes who were also checking out the exhibit in its final weekend. A couple of hours later our brains are full, our stomaches empty and our thirst for liquid refreshments intense.

We stood at the elevator chatting as we discussed our next move. The huge elevator doors swooshed open and out stepped ... The ARTIST herself: Kara Walker! She was surrounded by an entourage of what seemed to be museum execs and possible funders/producers of her exhibit;-). Kara smiled as she recognized that I recognized her. There are no images of her at the exhibit. I only knew what she looked like because I went onto one of her websites after attending the exhibit last week. As the group passed, I looked at my girl and asked, "Do you think we should ask her for an autograph?"
My girl shrugged and said, "It can't hurt. My mom always said, 'If the opportunity presents itself...'".

So, we followed the group into the next room as my girl dug into her bag for a pen. We stood by in order to be unobtrusive and not wanting to draw attention to ourselves or the artist - in case she was not trying to be swamped by an autograph signing frenzy. As I watched her talking to her entourage I waited for a pause and asked her if she'd mind signing our Gallery Guides. She smiled and excused herself as her entourage watched, smiling. Kara asked my name. I told her then we laughed as I said, "You don't need to write all of that. I just appreciate your taking the time to sign your name." Kara then told us a quick story of when she was young and approached Coretta Scott King for an autograph who blatantly told her: NO! We laughed and I said that I appreciated that she did not take that stance;-). My girl told her that we were amazed by the size of her work and it would be great to see video of her creating and installing her exhibits. To which Kara replied, that she would bet there's some video floating in cyberspace of her doing such (but i couldn't find it;-). We shook her hand, wished her well, thanked her again and headed out for dinner and drinks. Annnd ... HERE is Ms. Walker's autograph to ME!!

An artist worth checking out: Kara Walker

Went to check this sistah's exhibit out at the Whitney. If she's ever in your area I suggest you do the same! In addition to thought provoking subject matter, the fact that one of her mediums is paper cut-outs on such a large scale is fascinating to me!

check your local library to view a copy and/or just straight purchase a copy! If you're blessed to have been privy to this before - then U know I "speak" the truth. U can't beat historical entertainment that also educates;-).

Quick story: U may have "heard" it but it still crax me up & since this is my blog I'm gonna tell it anyway and since I'm posting an old movie it came to mind;-):
Y'all know I tend to like my mens young (well, they step to me, so it must be mutual;-). But, the FUN.EEE.est conversation I ever had w/ one of my youngstahs:
He asked about the last movie I'd seen. It's a running joke w/ my sibs & I that the response to that question is: "Cooley High." So, when I gave him my typical response he didn't laugh it off as most of my generation do. He looked at me closely and asked,"You saw that in the theater??"
Don't tell him, but I think my parents took us to see Buck and The Preacher at a local Drive-In movie theater. Do any of you remember Drive-Ins when they were entertainment for the entire family? Mannn, those were the days!

I MUST See This Movie

I've GOT to see: The Great Debaters. And I think everyone else should, too.
And I'm glad to learn that this is one HBCU that has not closed its doors - even though I'd never heard of the school until I heard about the movie. Wiley College: maybe the movie will garner more support for them.

We Don't Always Know How Blessed We Are

Peeped in on CortGee today and learned the unfortunate news that comedian extra-ordinaire: Rasheed has passed away ( I hope they keep his myspace page up which is where I linked his name to - it has his baby flix & then some). A THIRTY-SIX year OLD Brother suffered a HEART-attack! WTF?! I don't care WHAT he was or was NOT doing ... how U gonna suffer a Heart ATTACK at 36? Come ON FOLX - take HEED & take CARE! Prayers go out to Rasheed's Family. I just feel blessed that I actually experienced this Brother Live & in Person with Rob Stapleton at the Laugh Lounge when my Moma & Nephew came to NYC to visit me a couple of years ago! *Read goals daily & Write daily lists - perfect way to start the day! Successfully done!
*Go thru all mail - sort, file & shred as needed. - this rolls over to this week.
*Organize home office. - Proudly ordered organizing "tools" - will complete this week once they're delivered.
*Complete and submit application for NY Public Schools. Successfully DONE!!
*In bed by 10pm EST (Sun. - Thurs. - rest up, Sweetie;-) - this was rough, succeeded twice, but the night owl in me fought hard;-)

Here's what's keeping me busy this week:
* Get into bed by 11pm (Sun. -Thurs.) - more realistic;-).
* Rise & Shine by 6:30am;-).
*Continue the winning habit of writing daily lists.
*Network and post the information to begin sales of my educational workbook.
*Write 2 hours each day.
*Complete last week's roll over items.

Wednesday Wisdom - Jena Six Dedication

I've been quietly observing the blogs and internet attention of the six young men being unjustly charged in Jena, Louisiana. The Jena 6 is another painful reminder to me of the historical struggle of my people here in the "United" States. I get so frustrated because similar incidents happen too often! I've also felt I wanted to DO more than sign petitions and can't afford to send donations to every cause that I feel strongly about. Besides, sending money doesn't really give me a sense that I've done anything. I happened to be in my car during the Michael Baisden show when he played this song dedicated to the Jena Six (by Jasiri X) and announced that on Thursday, Sept. 20th we should all wear Black in support of the Jena Six. Now, wearing Black (and "dressing" my blog in Black) gives me something to DO, especially since I am unable to attend the rally in Jena on Thursday.
Can you imagine an entire nation in BLACK on the same day? I'm looking forward to it.
