Heaven help US!!!

I wish this were a fictional excerpt. I had an appointment to present information to Newark High School students today. I shared an online resource to assist them in deciding careers and colleges. As I was helping one student send the link of the resource to himself, I noticed many of the emails in his box came from this site below. I didn't ask him about it, but came home and immediately did a search. I CANNOT believe this is a real site. I do know that HATE sites exist, now I've discovered SELF-HATE sites exist. I wrangled with whether or not to ignore it because I don't want to promote it - but many of you have children and you need to be aware of all the manure they encounter here in cyberspace.

I went to the site in search of information about those who developed it, without success. Next, I went to their Terms of Agreement and this is what I found (most of this is so ridiculous to me, because the very EXISTENCE of the site is a form of harassment in my opinion).

"The following is a partial list of the kind of Content that is illegal or prohibited on the Website. NiggaSpace.com reserves the right to investigate and take appropriate legal action in its sole discretion against anyone who violates this provision, including without limitation, removing the offending communication from the Service and terminating the membership of such violators. It includes Content that:

  • is patently offensive to the online community, such as Content that promotes racism, bigotry, hatred or physical harm of any kind against any group or individual;

  • harasses or advocates harassment of another person; "
Though, I do have to ask myself why I'm irritated by NiggaSpace...but find www.rent-a-negro.com a Politically Strong statement....Hmmmm.

Oh yeah. Lo turned me on to nigga space a while back. Such an awful name for a web site. Heck, I might as well start this handy man business I thought of years ago called "House Nigga Handyman Service"

Sounds stupid, doesn't it. Well, so does niggaspace.com

Respect for being a teacher's teacher. This is crazy! What next? Jiggaboonappymofo.org? It makes me sick!

Exactly. 'How will you feel about you?'

Isn't that what it is all about?

People who argue "nigga" is derogatory always take the stance that it is demeaning, and those who use it must have self esteem issues.

People who who argue "nigga" is O.K. always take the stance that it is terminology to be overcome, and by adopting it, using, it removes the negative power of the word.

Here's the thing. Either/or, your talking about adults. Question is, how is the word viewed, internalized, processed, understood by little children? Are they desensitized? Stigmatized? Demoralized? Empowered? Which is it? Regardless of the relative potency or lack thereof for this word, the consequences of using it logically outweigh the benefits.

I try not to say shit, fuck, damn and what not in front of my eight year old, though I may throw a cuss into every other sentence when I am amongst certain grown friends. All I'm sayin, is regardless how you feel about the word and its usages, you got to realize that there really is a time and a place. Just as that is true for all words that are on the fence.

Imo.

I never intended to go forward with the name and I talked myself out of the handy man service because I didn't have the passion to do it on the level I would have wanted; as just a manager of the process. I was thinking more of a franchise opportunity. Maybe when I'm not busy in between writing bestsellers, I'll explore some of those ideas.

If you're writing best sellers, you will be able to absorb the cost of giving your friends a copy? ^^

I can say that I was turned on to the site by Lo as well ... I laughed at it ... not cause it's not harmful but because it gave niggas a place to make friends.. and Imus got fired what the fugg ...

Ced - thanx for the respect:-)

Dave - i personally don't think that people who use the nigga term have self-esteem issues, i think they have lack of history/memory issues (myself included when i tossed it around carelessly. now when i use it - it is with purposeful, knowledgeable intent!). yea, words on the fence are just that - i like that description.

Rich - as U do, i continue to toy w/ some biz ideas that others may not deem politically correct, we'll see how i feel about them after i'm published (= my first goal:-).

Cortney - yea, Imus' firing has put many others under the glass for inspection:-).

Thanx again for coming through my spot,BlogFam! I always 'preciate ya!
